How To Make DIY Raised Beds Using Concrete Cinder Blocks

This is a simple garden that took me and my wife about 40 mins to make. It's not super beautiful by any means but it is functional. If you decide to build one yourself you can make it taller and even fence it in. Enough small talk, here the the steps to build this garden.

1. You will want to find a sunny location in your yard. Arrange the blocks however it may suit you.We choose 2 x 5 blocks.

2. Lay down a layer of groundcover down or in this case we choose cardboard.

3. Add either manure or soil to your raised bed.

4. Plant your seeds. We picked sweet basil, and hot peppers.

5. We noticed some of the block were loose. I used some 14" pieces of rebar ast stakes to hold some of the blocks in place. Those cups are the self water planters from another post. They fit nicely in the block holes.

6. Finish up an gave it a water. Project took about 40 mins from start to finish. Today is March 25th, 2020. Ill come back in a week and show a progress photo.

How To Make Self Watering Planters

How To Make Self Watering Planters

Tools I used

  • Drill
  • Razor knife
  • Scissors
Stock I used
  • old mop
  • 1.25 Liter Coke bottles
  • manure

I always have a bunch of these plastic bottles laying around. I hate to throw them away when u can find many uses for them around the house and garden. Here is one more use we found that anyone can do with just a few simple tools.

Instructions:

1.Start by cutting the soda bottle in half. I like to keep the top half (the one with the cap) shorter than the bottom so there is a lot more room for water. I travel a lot i need to hold when i go away for a week to ten days.

2.Drill a hole in the cap of the bottle with a cordless drill. Pictured below.

1.25 liter bottle with hole drilled in cap

Thread a piece of old mop, rope or yarn through the pop bottle cap hole so that there is an equal amount on both sides.
Put the top end of the bottle inside the bottom with the cap facing down.

Now it's done. Go ahead and plant some of your favorite seeds in each one and put some water on them to get them started. After they get rooted you will no longer need to water them and just fill the reservoir.
